Gunmen burn down house of ex-councillor, shot 4 others in Rivers

Gunmen burnt down house of former councilor in Emohua local government area of Rivers State, killed a vigilante and shot four others.

According to Punch, the gunmen suspected to be cultists paid the surprising visit to Chigozie Woka after they have killed one security operative working with ONELGA Security Peace and Advisory Committee.

The incident happened on Wednesday.

There have been conflicting accounts, blurring the complete picture of what really transpired.

One eyewitness who spoke to journalists said the assailants were cultists, and they came with the mission to kill him and his brothers.

Introducing himself simply as Eze, the witness said he and three of his brothers were at the house when they heard gunshots, followed by sound of motorcycles which pulled up at their home.

“I stood up to check who they were, and I saw boys working for a man called “Naked” with guns. I immediately told my brother to run.

“As we fled, they shot at us. We were four in total, and I haven’t seen my brother since. We’ve been calling around, but no one has seen him.

“They accused us of giving information to security agencies. That was the last thing I heard before I fled,” Eze said.

However, another source disputed the account, accusing the former councilor of sponsoring the attack.

The Youth Chairman of Omuobu village in Ibaa, Achor Egberuwho, said it was on the order of Chigozie Woka that the cultists came.

“It’s laughable that Chigozie Woka would stoop so low. He led a group to attack ‘Naked’. If not for the grace of God, ‘Naked’ would have been killed,” he said, added that “Naked” was a member of OSPAC.

Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the incident, said investigation would be launched to catch the culprits.

“Yes, I can confirm that one person was killed and a house destroyed. Investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend the culprits,” said SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Command’s spokesperson.
