“Sack Wike now!” Protesters occupy streets in Abuja

Thousands of displaced persons occupied Abuja metropolis to protest their plight over the “senseless” demolition of their homes by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The protest, led by lawyer and human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, hit Abuja yesterday.

“There is no justification for this demolition.

“We appeal to President Bola Tinubu to consider the plight of the displaced residents, who are barely surviving,” Adeyanju told journalists.

Wike is using his dreaded task force called ‘Operation Sweep‘ to deal a blow to the poor in the capital territory.

They were reportedly burning houses and wantonly destroying properties worth millions of naira in a heavy-handed tactics.

According to Adeyanju, most of those affected by the demolitions are already displaced persons on the run – due to insecurity – from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

“These demolitions are excessive, and Mr. President needs to act to prevent further harassment of the people.

“We are sounding a warning to those in government that peace is only achievable if the poor are allowed to live peacefully. When the poor cannot sleep, it affects everyone,” the activist continued.

Vincent Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, also criticized the government.

“This is strange. The repercussions of this will have a heavy toll on Abuja. These people have been rendered homeless amid the ongoing hardship in the country. They are evicting these people without compensating them. It is sad that the elite think the poor are not part of society,” he remarked.

The protesters also called on President Bola Tinubu to stop the demolitions and to look into the ongoing reallocation of the land that aimed to benefit the rich.
