HYPOCRISY! EFCC indicts 4 Buhari’s Minister over N187bn fraud, one to spend Xmas in custody

Former president Muhammad Buhari under fire as 4 of his Ministers are now under investigation by Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), one of them to spend Xmas Christmas in custody

The former President Muhammad Buhari is under fire as ongoing investigations by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) have already indicted four of his Minister over N187 billion fraud, casting dark cloud on the much-talked integrity of his administration.

The Mail reported that EFCC was trailing one Mr James Okwete, a contractor, who operated 143 different bank accounts and who fraudulently received over N37 billion from Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development under Sadiya Umar-Farouk, Buhari’s Minister.

Mr Okwete has been finally arrested and would spend Christmas in EFCC custody, an insider source from the anti-graft agency confirmed to Punch.

“The contractor involved in the N37.1bn fraud has been arrested and would spend Christmas in our custody. He has given some names, and the former humanitarian affairs minister and directors-general in the ministry were linked to the fraud,” it said.

“It is not only Umar-Farouk we are investigating. Three other former ministers are also under probe. They were allegedly involved in graft to the tune of N150bn,’’ a credible source in the EFCC confided in our correspondent on Sunday,” another source said, added that former agencies’ directors-general are expected to go down as the probe progresses.

Buhari was swept to victory in 2015 mainly for his success in deceiving voters that he would have “zero-tolerance for corruption.” And all the while he was in power, had kept maintaining that his administration was as clean as a whistle.

The ongoing probe is not just a national scandal, but it is also a huge embarrassment to the former President, the so-called man of integrity who hounded countless men and women to abyss with his anti-corruption mantra.
