But all that changes with the return of President Donald Trump to the White House. According to US immigration authorities, Trump has okayed suspension of the decade-long practice and officers could enter churches or hospitals or schools to pick illegal immigrants.
“Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest.
“The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense,” Benjamine Huffman, the acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said yesterday.
Trump, during campaigns, vowed to oversee the greatest crackdown on illegal immigrants in the United States. He has already signed number of executive orders to this effect, and has significantly promoted cooperation among Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice), local and state governments.
Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, said immigration officers across the country would begin instant, aggressive enforcement.
“They’re going to do it throughout the country. We have offices throughout the country, and every Ice officer is going to be out there and enforce the law starting tomorrow morning,” Homan said.
