AFCON: “They’re beasts,” Benin recount their own ordeal in Libya

Again, Libya has proved itself to be too wicked as it treated Cheetahs of Benin Republic like another piece of shit.

“It was really a war zone. This Libyan team, this country and its supporters didn’t respect us at the start of the match,” Benin captain Steve Mounie recounted the hell he and his team had to face when the North African nation hosted them.

Benin has already qualified after holding the Mediterranean Knights to a 0-0 draw in Tripoli, finishing second in Group B.

After the game, swarm of Libyans descended on the Cheetahs, hurling objects at them and ultimately scuttling the Gernot Rohr-led Benin team’s celebration at Tripoli National Stadium.

The Libyan security joined their civilian brothers in the assault. Some security personnel reportedly attacked the bus carrying the Cheetahs as they moved, leaving coach Gernot Rohr and others wounded.

The team’s ordeal is coming weeks after Nigeria’s Super Eagles faced similar fate in Libya. Their flight was diverted to some remote airport few minutes before landing.

On top of that, the Super Eagles were left stranded for more than 18 hours – without internet access, food and water.
