Federal Government is determined to maltreat Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The almost three-year trial hasn’t change anything as Justice Binta Nyako weighed in again with another twists.
Nyako, whom Kanu had asked to recuse herself from his case, has sent urgent notice to the separatist leader, ordering him to appear before Federal High Court on Monday.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, disclosed this after the routine visits to Kanu and his family, calling the notice “surprising”.
“Our discussions centered on the surprising Notice we received to appear in court with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on Monday, 10th February 2025. We shall appear with a bated breath,” Ejimakor said.
After Kanu asked that Justice Binta Nyako recused herself from his case – a demand which she respected – the Chief Judge couldn’t reassign the case to another Justice because none of the judges in Abuja accepted the case.
This prompted Kanu’s legal team to write the Chief Judge to transfer the case to any of the Federal High Court division in the Southeast.
Then, all of sudden, the notice came that Binta Nyako summoned Kanu to court on Monday. The legal team would be protesting the reassignment on Monday, according to Ejimakor.
“Given that no other judge in the Abuja division is willing to take the case, the only option left is to transfer the case to any division of the Federal High Court in the Southeast geopolitical zone, especially since the offenses are alleged to have had impact in Southeast (and not Abuja), which thus gives the Southeast divisions a far superior jurisdiction than any other division, including Abuja,” Ejimakor said.
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, was arrested in Kenya in 2021. He was returned to Nigeria and charged with several crimes, many of which lacked merit and had been struck out.
Since then, and despite many voices calling for the IPOB leader’s unconditional release, the Federal Government has made no effort to hid its intention that Kanu cannot win in the court regardless of whether or not he is innocent.
