The structures of opposition politics at Udenu council area in Enugu State have collapsed into the ruling Peoples’ Democratic party, leaving their candidates stranded as September 21 elections approach.
It is happening now (2.56pm, 14/9/24) at Orba wards 1 and 2.
One by one various support groups of Labour Party, All Progressives Congress among others filed out to the stage and publicly pledged their support to Aka Eze Aka, the PDP chairmanship candidate in Udenu.
- Aninri LP in disarray as its members switch support to Nwanjoku
- PDP factions in Aninri merged to elect Prince Nwanjoku
The trend is everywhere. Each day there is news of either LP or APC groups dropping their candidates to pledge allegiance to PDP tickets.
In Aninri, Ezeagu, Nkanu East – to name a few – some opposition candidates are reportedly considering to quit due to lack of support.
The Saturday’s elections is going to be some kind of an acid test to prove Labour Party enthusiasts wrong that the party was nothing without Mr Peter Obi, said former PDP Chairman in Udenu.
Recall that LP had delt a blow to PDP in the 2023 general elections, sweeping 14 out of 24 seats in Enugu State House of Assembly while PDP won only 10. Also LP won 2 senatorial districts, leaving PDP with one, and took 7 stole 7 seats in the House of Representatives.
PDP had since retrieved most of those seats, returning Enugu back to PDP state with most of the remaining elected officials of LP decamped to the ruling party.
Nigeria has the long tradition of having the council chairmen and councilors in the party of the state governor.
