EFCC arrest Edo State Accountant General, others ahead inauguration

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has arrested Edo State Accountant General, Mr. Julius O. Anelu.

Anelu was arrested on Thursday alongside four other officials of the present administration in the state.

According to report, the four officials could better be described as victims as EFCC knew and said they committed no crime.

The reason for their arrest is to prevent Governor Godwin Obaseki from making last-minute withdrawal from the state’s treasury.

Obaseki is handing over to new administration in 11 days and the new administration. Governor-elect, Sen. Monday Okpebholo’s swearing-in ceremony is on November 12.

The four officials undee detention are signatories to the state account, Daily Trust reported. And they are going to remain in EFCC facilities until November 12.

This drama is coming after Edo State House of Assembly hastily approved budget few days to the start of new government.

According to sources, the arrest was calculated to halt government activities.

Obaseki wouldn’t be able to pay emoluments due to civil servants. The pensioners and other public servants would also be stranded.

Statutory payments such as security bills and other obligations are also halted until the new administration started.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won the September 21 governorship election in the exercise that has been characterized as rigged.
