Gov. Mbah reacts to rumour that he imposes N5 million tax on private schools in Enugu
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has reacted to rumour that he is mandating all private schools in the state to pay education taxes of N5 million.
The State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah made the clarification in a statement this morning, according to NAN report. He said the report that the government is taxing private schools to pay between N1 million to N5 million mandatory payment is false.

“New and existing private schools in the state are required to either register for provisional approval or have their licences renewed.
“This is between ₦100,000 and ₦300,000, depending on the category the schools falls in. The approved schedule of fees was released to the public earlier in June,” the statement read.
Explaining further, Prof. Mbah said that existing laws empower the government to play active roles in maintaining minimum standard in both public and private schools.
He added that critical stakeholders in education sector were reached repeatedly during the revision of 2024 Enugu State Schools Licensing Fees Regulation.
Operating a school without license has minimum 10 years of jail term.
