Keri Russell even heightens the tension in The Diplomat, using the complex marriage between Kate and Hal as the major tool.
“They have such a fun, spiky, crazy relationship, and to me, it’s the glue of the show. They’re just completely crazy about each other… and they drive each other crazy,” she said.

Russell said: “Dennison is so wildly different from Hal, and I think that’s what’s so attractive to Kate,” Russell notes. “He’s like smooth, slow motion compared to Hal’s franticness, and she just thinks he’s a good man. For all of Hal’s flaws and seemingly selfish decisions at times, she sees Dennison as this good guy in politics. That is rare, and that creates some massive tension for Hal and Kate.
Will The Diplomat finale eventually tie Kate and Hal together again?
But it appears Kate isn’t ready to leave her ex-husband, Hal. He has a close shave with death in explosion.
“Hal gets hurt in the explosion, and that changes things and grounds them in a way,” Russell says. “She’s staying and she’s going to help make sure he’s okay, and he is really trying hard to be good.
