The call is coming ahead of Enugu Timber Market Union elections in November 6.
Group consisting of former chairmen, former secretaries, elders and leaders of thought in the Enugu Timber Union, New Era, Enugu South Local Government Area notify newsmen this morning.
“The main reason for this press briefing is to intimate the good people of Enugu state about the upcoming general elections in the union on the 6th November, 2024,” they said, added that they were pushing for crisis-free exercise.
According to the chairmen, the looming danger hangs around the sitting chairman, Chief Nwatu Ugochukwu, who is seeking reelection in open disregard of the zoning formula that, for decades, has ensure peaceful transition of powers in the market.
Chief Nwatu, who lead in the slot of Enugu East Senatorial zone, would be completing his 6-year tenure in a matter of days.
Its the turn of Enugu North Senatorial zone, Daily Post reported, but Nwatu has refused to go, citing that the Union’s constitution doesn’t recognize any zoning arrangement.
The Chairman of the Patrons, Chief Felix Ozonwagu, has thrown his support on Nwatu, insisting that competence – not zoning – would determine who the next Union’s chairman would be.
“This Ugochukwu worked for us and he said he wants to seek a second term; we said yes, he has the right, because this constitution allowed him.
“He will come out, Nsukka person will come out, two of them will contest, if he (Ugochukwu) wins, it will be his second tenure, but if the Nsukka person wins, then he will step aside,” Ozonwagu said.
