Amidst loud public outcry, the Senate has proceeded to approve the emergency rule in Rivers State.
The decision was taken hours ago after a closed-door session by the lawmakers. Before the senate approval, the House of Representatives had earlier okayed the the proclamation.
However, the Senate made three points clear to President Bola Tinubu during the meeting, PoliticsNigeria reported.
The president has to consider lifting the state of emergency before six months, the lawmakers were said to have demanded. They also set up ad-hoc committee, with the members drawn from both chambers. Among other things, the committee is to oversee the developments in the oil-rich state during the emergency.
Additionally, the Senate asked that a second committee be formed. Its members are to be drawn from across Nigeria, and its shall be charged with mediating in the in the Rivers State crisis with the aim to resolving the issues.
The Mail reported that President Bola Tinubu declared state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday night, citing the lingering political crisis as his reason. Following the proclamation, he appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the Sole Administrator.
Ibok-Ete was sworn in yesterday at the State House, Abuja, and, earlier today he moved down to Port Harcourt and took over.
So far, prominent lawyers and Nigerians have condemned Tinubu’s action, accusing him of siding with his Minister Nyesom Wike to destabilise Rivers state for personal gain.
