• More on Tinubu news today
The race for 2027 elections is long set. At the moment, its the question of who will replace Mahmood Yakubu that’s in front of the presidency.
Yakubu, the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be leaving in November, the time he would be done with his two term in office.
Vanguard reported that “plot to compromise” the 2027 elections outcomes is on the go. President Bola Tinubu wants another yes-man as INEC chairman.
Already number of names have been shortlisted, although the news agency withheld them.
According to the report, those pulling the strings are outside Aso Rock. But they’re Tinubu’s known friends, working closely with those in the presidency in shopping for the kind of a person who would deliver exactly the kind of outcomes the president would like in 2027.
Tinubu News Today: When did the plot starts?
It has not been clear when the plot began. But the former South-South governor is confirmed to be the masterminder.
Tinubu is allegedly not on board yet, although there appears to be no way he wouldn’t be. Or, he would certainly get on board eventually.
Of all the names on the table, who will finally emerged the chairman of the electoral umpire would be defeating others based on his malleability. The person must be the one who would do the president’s bidding without question.
Tinubu seeks to avoid Buhari’s missteps in INEC
President Bola Tinubu still have a whole six months to make things right. Otherwise he would be repeating the mistakes of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
When Buhari won the presidency in 2015 he relaxed and no longer thought anything about INEC. Then, the tenure of Attahiru Jega, INEC chairman at the time, expired. In line with the statues of the commission, Jega handed over to Ambassador (Dr.) Ahmed Wali who was the most senior.
Wali’s stay was to last until a substantive chairman was appointed.
However, President Buhari woke up suddenly from his slumber, overriding Jega’s decision. The president appointed his family member, Mrs Amina Bala Zakari as the acting INEC chairman which was against the law.
The 1999 Constitution which states that appointment of INEC chairman must pass through the consultation of the council of the state. Buhari consulted nobody. Rather he said the appointment of his “sister” take immediate effect from June 30, barely 24 hours after Jega handed over to Wali.
Interestingly, Wali is far higher in the ladder than Zakali at the time even though the two were both National Commissioners of INEC.
Buhari’s mistakes swallow INEC into needless boiling controversies until he was eventually pressured to appoint Professor Mahmood Yakubu four months after.
