Tinubu praises National Assembly for approving emergency rule in Rivers

All Updates on Rivers emergency rule

President Bola Tinubu said the members of National Assembly are “patriotic” after they have okayed emergency rule in Rivers State.

He stated this in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.

“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the action of leaders,” Tinubu said.

President Tinubu imposed emergency rule in Rivers State, Tuesday night, citing the lingering political crisis as his reason.

Its in the section 305 of the 1999 Constitution that state of emergency is written. For president to invoke it and bring it to effect, he would need the approval from both chambers of the National Assembly.

Since Tuesday, opposition leaders have capitalised on the check to urge members of the National Assembly not to approve Tinubu’s proclamation.

However, both Houses shunned the voices and unanimously approved the emergency in separate sessions.

Tinubu has succeeded with his proclamation, but not in stopping the spiralling controversy following it. He has every reason to call the Senators and Reps members patriots.
