It may be President Bola Tinubu’s aim to help out at last. The abrupt sack of Mele Kyari comes as surprise to many Nigerians who are suffering the gross inefficiency of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) management.

Announcing Kyari’s sack as the NNPC chief hours ago, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, added that all the 11-man board was replaced.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a sweeping reconstitution of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited board,” the statement began.

It went ahead to name the replacements.

“President Tinubu removed all other board members appointed with Akinyelure and Kyari in November 2023.

“The new 11-man board has Engineer Bashir Bayo Ojulari as the Group CEO and Ahmadu Musa Kida as non-executive chairman.

Tinubu appointed Bello Rabiu, Yusuf Usman and Babs Omotowa as board members, representing North West, North East and North Central respectively.

Henry Obih was appointed as non-executive director to represent South East.

According to the statement, the board’s restructuring is aimed at restoring investors’ confidence.

NNPC has been a ineffective for years. As a national company, it has consistently failed, generally perceived to be epicentre of corruption.
