At least 22 men hustling for their daily needs are now dead as mining pit fell on them.

The incident happened at the government-designated illegal mining site located near game reserve at Gashaka Local Government Area in Taraba State and Toungo Local Government Area in Adamawa State.
Almost all the deceased were from Jamtare town in Gashaka LGA, according to eyewitness who spoke to Daily Trust.
“They were mining gold in an area known as the Buffa zone within the Gashaka-Gumti National Park, covering parts of both Gashaka and Toungo. All 22 miners trapped in the pit are presumed dead,” the paper reported.
Chairman of Toungo LGA, Engineer Suleiman Toungo said he was aware, added that it was only five bodies that were found while the rest remained buried in the mine.
“Five bodies have been recovered so far,” Toungo said. He also said other some of the deceased came from Zamfara and Adamawa States.
The mining sites at National game reserve have buried many souls alive in recent time, but these incidences remain largely unreported.
Adamawa Police Public Relations Officer SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje and a Tila village resident narrated multiple incidences of pit collapses which claim so many lives.

Despite the constant loss of lives in the illegal mines, police are yet to take decisive action. They said they’re yet plan on how to collaborate with Gumti National Park authorities to regulate the mining sites.
