Addressing newsmen in Enugu on Friday, Dr Ubru said one of the challenges previous adminstrations faced was their inability to encourage real farmers. Those days, individuals with clout and who lacked the simplest idea about farming would seize all incentives the government provided for farmers while the real farmers sat on the sidelines with nothing.
Referring to them as “political farmers” the commissioner said their days are over. Already, 80,240 farmers has been registered in the last 18 months, Ubru said.
The National Identity Numbers (NINs), cell phone numbers, verified farm and residential addresses of the farmers have been duly capture as part of the steps to make sure the government gets to the real farmers.
“At a time before the emergence of Gov. Mbah, most genuine farmers lost interest in farming, as no government input and technical support was given to them.
“Today, we have real farmers and our agriculture-loving governor has increased funding in agriculture activities and food production.
“Governor Mbah is doing this through robust farmers’ participation in state-fashioned agricultural and agro-industrialisation programmes as well as in Federal and international institutions agricultural programmes and projects,” Dr Ubru said.
