Mr. Lateef, police boss in charge of Aninri, Awgu, Nkanu East and West council areas was in Aninri with Prince Ugochukwu Nwanjoku yesterday.

According to statement from Nwanjoku, the Aninri local government area chairman’s media office, Lateef’s visit was part of the chairman’s grand plan for “disruptive” economic growth in the area.

“Police Area Commander in charge of Aninri, Awgu, Nkanu East and Nkanu West local government areas, Mr Lateef, was hosted yesterday, February 11, 2025, by Aninri council chairman Prince Ugochukwu Nwanjoku.

“It was basically a security meeting, aimed at redesigning the council’s security architecture for optimal effectiveness. Part of the resolutions included reactivating community policing, fostering efficiency in information-sharing, and using new technologies to secure Aninri communities,” the statement read in part.

Some months ago, Prince Nwanjoku held similar meeting with top officials of Nigerian Army. In a personal chat with The Mail, he said he believed a good investment on security is critical to insuring investors’ confidence in modern society.

“If we build all the roads in the world – and we are doing a lot already, believe me – and enact all enabling laws, investment would still be stalled without adequate security in place.

“That’s why we are also prioritising security in the council,” Nwanjoku said.

Aninri was a haven for criminals and killer gangsters during the days of immediate past chairman, Bennett Ajah. Nicknamed 2-by-2 chairman, the council boss did not only allowed the reign of gangsters but he would also repeatedly unleash violent gangs on his opponents during political functions.

He presided over the darkest hours in Aninri political history, and that ultimately cost him the chance for second term.
