“We love Peter Mbah,” more Enugu Reps members dump LP

Updates on strategy to reelect Gov. Peter Mbah

The Labour Party madness is over in Enugu, and in Nigeria in general. The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has welcomed two House of Representatives members under Labour Party.

Dennis Agbo and Chidi Obeta – both representing Igboeze North/Udenu and Nsukka/Igboeze South federal constituencies respectively – officially dumped LP on Tuesday. They cited as their reason the Governor Peter Mbah’s “transformational leadership”.

Members of the state caucus of PDP in the lower chamber, Nnolim Nnaji, Anayo Onwuegbu and Martins Oke, welcomed them.

The development marks the latest in the PDP’s effort to consolidate power in Enugu ahead of 2027 elections. Last month, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga, the 2023 governorship candidate of LP, returned to PDP. He had been ardent PDP member until he failed to secure PDP ticket for governorship race in 2022.

LP launched the first real attack PDP has ever faced in Enugu State in 2023. It took 14 seats in the State Assembly, leaving PDP with just 10. It also won 2 out of the 3 senatorial seats; PDP won just one. Also, INEC announced that LP won 7 seats while PDP won one.

So far, most of the seats were reclaimed in the Court and given back to PDP. Right now Labour Party is so badly hit that it cannot mount any meaningful opposition in Enugu in many years to come.
